Black canyon on the map

The Greater Black Canyon area offers extraordinary outdoor experiences, diverse cultures steeped in Native American, mining and agricultural traditions, and striking landscapes and natural features. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area alone saw a combined 1.2 million visitors, who contributed nearly $60 million to local economies, in 2016. Gunnison Gorge and Dominguez-Escalante national conservation areas, world-class ski destinations, state parks, agricultural and heritage tourism opportunities, and emerging arts and cultural scenes are also draws for visitors, as well as new and long-time residents.

The Greater Black Canyon Momentum Initiative aims to foster improved coordination, collaboration, and cohesion among communities along the major transportation corridors in Ouray, Gunnison, Delta and Montrose counties leading to the Black Canyon and other destinations. The Momentum Initiative will explore how community leaders, businesses, industries, local governments, and land managers can work with one another to build connectivity, and attract and accommodate future visitation, recreation and growth, while preserving the area’s unique, rural characteristics, and natural resources.
